Richard (N7IYT) and I (K7DCL) have been discussing and experimenting with using cross-band repeater capabilities in remote areas of Arizona. I have gathered some documents and links that will be useful to our members that would like to have a one stop reference to Cross-Band as we have for APRS.
I respectively request that we establish a “Cross-band” or “X-band” tab on the members home page for information related to Cross-band repeaters.
Best regards,
David

One of the biggest advantages to living in Arizona is that we can actually use our public lands (Sorry California).
The London Bridge Amateur Radio association is considering putting on a T-hunt or "Fox" hunt in the Lake Havasu City area. I'm looking to see who would be interested in participating in this type of event. It'll be free, and if you havent ever been wheeling in Havasu, you have no earthly idea what youre missing.
It'll be in Novenber at the earliest. Let me know if there is any in…

I've been considering adding an APRS page/map to the 4x4HAM site. I played with a couple of sites and finally found one that seems to make it easy to imbed the map to one of our pages. .
So I've added an APRS TAB, created a new page, imbedded the map, and have been running it for a couple of weeks now and it seems to operate OK. A few things:
Clicking the APRS tab will open a new page so you can play with the map and still be able to use other parts of 4x4HAM.com site, chat room, read mail, po…

Wow! A lot has been going on! We continue to grow with members joining from around the globe, very cool. The Wednesday night nets are still going strong and we have had some guys setup to help with net control duties. Thanks guys!
The Samdog / Sunflower run was a huge success! David K7DCL, Gary KD7TXR, John K7JCY (Juicy), Kevin AD5VG, Rick W7STS, Drew KB8YYA and others, (sorry if I am forgetting anyone) did an excellent job with planning and execution of the event. It was well received by the V…

You hear them every weekend across the bands...special events stations commemorating something, sometimes famous, sometimes of only local interest, but always a good excuse to get on the air and make some contacts. On Sunday August 9, 2009 I had my first opportunity to be at the other end as I helped operate the W1BIM special events station for Smokey Bear's 65th birthday.
Event location was, appropriately, at a fire tower and while it didn't require 4x4, I took the Land Rover to get there. Sta…

I climbed up on the roof tonight with some cold beers to watch the flyover of the International Space Station. Sad to say it was too overcast and I couldn't see it. I did get a great view of it last Wednesday though! I may not have seen the ISS but it was an absolutely sunset and then dusk. Then everyone started lighting off their Pioneer Day fireworks, many of them illegal from Wyoming that were smuggled back over the State line. Then a massive storm began blowing in from our south. The wind pi…

I worked the Pioneer Day Handcart Parade today here in Northern Utah. For those of you that have no clue what "Pioneer Day" is, it is the Utah State holiday calibrating the arrival of Brigham Young and the first group of Mormon pioneers to the Salt Lake Valley, It is about as big as the 4th of July here. It was 102 degrees in the shade here today but guess what? I didn't get to work in the shade! I worked my ass of and got thoroughly baked... We provided basic parade communications, but we did h…

Today I attended my first Field Day. I stayed for about 2 1/2 hours watching the more experienced hams try and score as many contacts as possible. The person I sat with today already had 220 when I arrived and had at least 250 when I left. I filled in some of the info for him and several of his contacts. I wasn't confident enough to try to score some contacts myself. Maybe next year. :-) We heard from people all over the U.S. Pretty neat to see the Hams in action.

"The Alarm & Muster project has always been concerned with the creation of a network of communication of likeminded men and women nationwide that would refuse the infringement of their freedoms. It is our unalienable right to
life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and we will allow no man, no one, to infringe upon these. We are the children of 1775, if not by blood, then by spirit; and we extend our hand of welcome. "
I wanted to write a bit about this banner that we have here…

Today I participated in my first Ham Radio event. It was the annual MS Society walk. I was camped out on one of the major intersections. I didn't get any pics as I was busy taking pics for other folks. :-) There was a very big turn out. The weather was sunny but very nippy. The folks at the water stops were very busy. Sounded like they ran out of cups before water. The race lasted about 3 hours.
I was finally able to met some of the hams I have been talking to over the repeater. Nice to be able…

These are fantastic for remote, rooftop or backyard antennas, camping, tilt-ups, shade anything and Alan is bringing a truck load of into town -- both new and used. He'll be at the the AARC Hamfest Saturday. Mention you saw the posting and he'll give you a generous discount.

There was a very severe thunderstorm that just rolled through here not to long ago. There was a tornado warning for my county which lasted about 30 mins. A tornado was spotted about 25 miles to the SW of where I live. So I took my youngest to our store room in the basement and thought to grab my radio! :-) I have the WX function so I could listen directly to the weather report. I was amazed that the person who spotted the tornado was a Ham Radio operator! :-) That was very cool. There was some d…

My first Ham event will be on Sunday April 19th for the Multiple Sclerosis Walk in Elmwood park in Omaha. Radio Operators will provide communication support along the route. Hopefully all will go well and should be a great experience for my novice Ham skills.

Ragnar was, without a doubt the largest and most well organized event I have ever participated in. Kudos to all involved. Especialy those who spent the countless hours doing leg work in the months leading up to the event. Many runners stopped to say thanks for what we were doing. They were very appreciative and I got a cool shirt!
I set up my HF station after my first hour was reported and I had some time. I made quite a few contacts on 20 and 40 meters. I was callling myself the Un-offical Spe…

And it's all thanks to the folks at Kenwood. Since I picked up my new 710A Saturday I have been cramming so much information between my ears that I think my hat size has gone up. From learning how to use the free software to program the memories and other functions (a bit cumbersome because of the proprietary format for saving files) to just catching up on how much the radios have changed in the 10+ years since I purchased my brand-spanking-new Alinco 605 dual-bander it's been a heck of a weeken…
